MPR Extends Service Efficiently from Short-Term to Long-Term

Salem Fuel Handling Building (FHB) Degradation

Download the printable PDF

Leakage was identified in the Salem spent fuel pool liner, exposing the fuel handling building structure to degradation from long-term contact with boric acid.

MPR performed the engineering evaluation of the degraded condition, defined and directed the testing program to evaluate the mechanism and rate of degradation of concrete and rebar, defined the plan for developing the cleaning process, and defined the action plan to establish long-term structural adequacy of structure.

Demonstrated near term structural adequacy of the building and defined necessary actions for long-term service. Proactive evaluation and response noted by NRC as the program strength.
