Engineering Services/Nuclear:

Spent Nuclear Fuel Handling, Shipping and Storage (D&D)

MPR personnel are highly experienced in the design, operation and troubleshooting of nuclear fuel handling equipment, including cranes, refueling platforms and fuel storage racks. Our expertise includes design and testing of the equipment to remove fuel from the reactor and transfer fuel to the spent fuel pool. We have performed design reviews of problem refueling systems and assisted in the procurement and installation of replacement equipment. Other MPR experience associated with nuclear spent fuel handling includes the following:

  • Developed remote monitoring systems associated with fuel handling.

  • Primary design and development responsibility for the Navy's multi-purpose M130 spent fuel shipping cask.

  • Participated in the design and oversight of refueling operations in early shipboard nuclear plants, and responsible for the conversion from wet-shipping to dry-shipping of spent fuel as a follow-on to the M130 cask development and use. This was the first dry-shipping of nuclear fuel in the United States.

MPR has also evaluated the technical, economic and regulatory issues of spent fuel storage based on the experience of U.S. nuclear power plants. This included a comparison of dry cask storage versus wet storage in fuel pools. Information contained in the evaluation included detailed data about dry fuel storage in selected US plants, economic information affecting the choice of pool or dry storage, the regulations and long-term safety issues related to wet and dry storage, and the significant problems which have occurred with spent fuel storage, both wet and dry, in the United States.

Some of our D&D assignments have required extraordinary engineering effort as well as creative and unconventional approaches. The following pages provide insight to our experience in a few of the nuclear D&D projects:
