Technical Assistance for PUREX (D&D)
MPR served on a team of independent experts established by the U.S. Department of Energy to assist Westinghouse personnel place the PUREX facility in a safe storage condition. The team provided assistance and recommendations regarding the overall planning, and provided assistance in resolving specific problems. We helped define a reorganization of the existing personnel into a D&D project organization, and helped focus the activities on the need to reduce the hazards on the site and achieve safe store as quickly as practical. MPR also provided input on specific technical problems, e.g., underwater cutting of a highly radioactive component, based on our extensive experience with such cutting operations. The PUREX Project recently was completed many months ahead of schedule and tens of millions of dollars below budget.
