Hanford Spent Nuclear Fuel Project (D&D)

MPR personnel serve on the Technical Assistance Group (TAG) of the Spent Nuclear Fuel Project at Hanford. This project is directed at transfer of the fuel from the Hanford K Basins to an interim dry storage location on the site. TAG is responsible for oversight and assistance in technical issue resolution. This spent fuel represents over 80% of the spent fuel hazard at all DOE facilities. TAG has played a major role in defining basic approaches for handling the spent fuel. Specific areas covered by MPR include laboratory analyses for characterization of the spent fuel, development of defueling methods (the tooling to remove spent fuel from its storage locations, clean it and place it in shipping containers), pool sludge retrieval and disposition, pool water treatment and fuel storage cask design.
